QUILT WEEK JAPAN-- HURRY FEW PLACES REMAINING

20th November- 30th November 2010

15-20 Pax Fully Escorted

It is not surprising that quilting has found a following in Japan, a culture that sees no contradiction in finding art in craft and vice versa.  As in the West, women have been quilting since the invention of cloth, but as a hobby, quilting has grown rapidly in the last twenty years in Japan. Historically textiles of cotton and silk cloth were used as an item to trade with silk being used to wrap presents, hold tea and tea ceremony equipment, and frame pictures. Much of the imagery used in Japanese quilts of today can be traced to these historical routes. Buddhist monk vestments are of patchwork and thus a spiritual connection with cloth developed. In Japan by piecing together the patches of fabric you prolong the life of the fabric. In this sense a patchwork gift expresses long life to the recipient.

If you are a Quilter and wish to experience the beauty and cultural significance of Japanese Quilting than this is the Tour for you!
