TOUR DETAILS
Kumamoto Japan 20th - 29th March 2012 Fully
Escorted by Father Peter Quin SJ
As you travel around the Kyushu Kumamoto area of Japan you will be amazed by the natural splendour of this part of Japan. This is an exciting place you will remember forever. A key feature of this Tour will be the opportunity to trace the history of the Christian culture which bloomed in the area over 400 years ago. Luis de Almeida a Portuguese missionary visited Amakusa to teach Christianity at the invitation of Rinsen Shiki the feudal Lord of the northern part of Amakusa-Shimoshima in 1566. Approximatley 70% of the islanders in Amakusa were baptized with a strong religious piety under vows of the rosary. Learn firsthand about the tragic reality of the secret Christians when Christianity was prohibited and a loyalty test using a plate with a crucifix was enforced. The 16 year old Amakusa Shiro lead the Christians as they revolted against the suppressive forces. Retrace the history with Fr Peter Quinn as you encounter this fascinating past.
